BROKEN AND ENTERED
by Kurt McGinnis Brown
Directed by Susan Fete
Featuring Marti Gobel, Nicholas Harazin & Marcus Truschinski

Mon. March 15, 2010 at 7:30

A humorous and compelling new work by Madison-based playwright Kurt McGinnis Brown - author of MCT’s past reading presentation of NOT THE ARTIST. In BROKEN AND ENTERED two 20-something brothers live in their recently deceased mother’s home in a poverty stricken and dangerous part of the city.  Vern and Wally soon realize in order to survive they need to “take what they can get,” literally. Each night they guiltlessly burglarize homes in nearby wealthy neighborhoods. When Wally gets involved in a relationship with their neighbor Jamila, the brothers are forced to face demons from their childhood. Will they choose to live in the past or to move on to a new life?

Reading in The Skylight Bar & Bistro, located on the second level of the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.  Reading reservations are not required; seating is first-come, first-served. The reading is free of charge, with donations kindly accepted.  The Skylight Bar & Bistro will be open for dinner service beginning at 5:30 p.m. on March 15. For more information, call Milwaukee Chamber Theatre at (414) 276-8842.

We don't know what's ahead, but 2008 offered plenty of gems
~Damien Jaques, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

..."Veteran actress Laura Gordon has emerged as a skilled director in recent years, and with the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre production of "Well" in August, she proved she can ably handle any challenge. Lisa Kron's off-Broadway hit employs a theatrical form that could be described as engaging anarchy as it explores the difficulty of separating one's identity from parents while maintaining love and respect for them.

The piece is so delightfully and determinedly unwieldy, I can barely imagine how you direct "Well" well, but Gordon did. Angela Iannone was particularly sharp and incisive - has she ever been anything else? - as the principal character, the playwright.

The Chamber Theatre also reached lofty heights with its April production of "Tally's Folly," the sensitive Lanford Wilson gem that happily receives frequent revivals. With C. Michael Wright directing, Laura Gray chose to play Sally Tally, the backwoods Ozark woman with a college degree and big-city attitudes, differently than most. The actress presented us with an intensely Southern woman, comfortable in full makeup and heels, and that interpretation offered a new perspective on the gently comic drama." ...

Michael Wright

Looking back at 2008
~Paul Kozidowski, Culture Club, Milwaukee Magazine

... "With that in mind, let’s toast 2008’s Artist of the Year, who dealt with financial challenges while moving his organization ahead in exciting new directions. And also served some time in the director’s chair and did his theater proud. C. Michael Wright has spent his three years at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre well. He realigned the aesthetic mission of the theater to include more contemporary work; he added a play development program focusing on local and Midwest playwrights; and he helped erase the deficit he inherited when he became its artistic director in 2005. At the same time, he has directed some terrific productions, helping actors like Jonathan West and Laura Grey (Talley’s Folly), and Jacque Troy, Stephen Koehler and Jan Rogge (Rabbit Hole) find the nuances and substance of beautifully written characters." ...
